Alor, Indonesia (Mar. 26, 2005) – Cmdr. Mark Roback, a Navy dentist from the Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), speaking to his patient through an interpreter, tells her that the injection he is giving her will numb the area around her decaying tooth before he extracts it. Mercy is currently off the coast of Alor, Indonesia to provide humanitarian assistance and focus medical care to thousands of people displaced by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck Nov. 11, 2004. While ashore, Mercy’s crew will focus on public health, primary care, dental treatment, preventive medicine, health education and pharmaceutical support.
